J.S. Bach’s Mass in B minor is considered one of the greatest masterworks in the choral canon, and was described by one scholar as “a summary of [Bach’s] writing for voice […] Bach’s mighty setting preserved the musical and artistic creed of its creator for posterity.” Albany Pro Musica will be joined by renowned guest soloists and experts in historically informed performance who play in period-instrument orchestras such as the Handel + Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, Apollo’s Fire, Trinity Baroque, and others.

Featuring the Alturas Duo
Composers have, for centuries, drawn inspiration from the immense beauty, power, and vastness of the seas. The acclaimed Alturas Duo joins Albany Pro Musica for Oceana, or Cadera de las Islas, a work for chorus, guitar, charango, and viola by contemporary composer and guitarist Javier Farías. This chamber work sets the poetry of Pablo Neruda to music and evokes the wonders of the ocean. The first half will include diverse works by Hoffman, Barnum, Orlovich, and others which pay musical homage to the seas.

Albany Pro Musica will join the Albany Symphony Orchestra for Beethoven’s monumental Ninth Symphony under the baton of David Alan Miller. This performance will also include “Blue Electra” by Michael Daugherty featuring violinist Anne Akiko Meyers.
APM is pleased to welcome the Union College Chamber Singers to perform this masterwork with the Albany Symphony Orchestra. Union College Chamber Singers was established in the fall of 2021 by Shou Ping Liu, the Director of Performance at Union College. An audition-based group, it is the most selective vocal ensemble on campus for singers of considerable vocal training. The Chamber Singers made their debut on Union’s Carnegie Hall tour in March of 2022. The ensemble performs roughly three times a year and has received numerous invitations for international choral festivals.

Albany Pro Musica presents the Capital Region premiere of Star Song by Bradley Ellingboe, APM’s composer-in-residence. APM will close our season with Brahms’ profound, humanist masterpiece, his Ein deutsches Requiem. Unlike traditional requiem masses, this piece focuses on the living, beginning with the second Beatitude: “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Through this work, we will remember those lost to the COVID-19 pandemic, and comfort those who survived. We’ll open the concert with Schumann’s sparkling Piano Concerto in A minor.

We will present all-time musical theater favorites, arranged for chorus, including “Aquarius”/“Let the Sunshine In” from Hair; “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music; and a medley of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s best Broadway tunes. The Park Playhouse in Albany’s Washington Park will allow for distanced outdoor seating to ensure the safety of our patrons and singers.

As our world emerges from the tragedy that the COVID-19 pandemic has shrouded us in, Albany Pro Musica will take you on an emotional journey from fear, conflict, and death to joy, peace, love, and redemption. This concert features two world premiere performances, Bradley Ellingboe’s The Old Oak Tree and Steve Murray’s When Death Came for Us, along with works by Morten Lauridsen, Arvo Pärt, Eric Whitacre, Jake Runestad, and Gabriel Fauré. From Despair…Light! includes appearances by celebrated guest artists Philip Lima and Elizabeth Pitcairn, playing the legendary Red Mendelssohn Stradivarius violin, with special contributions by the New York State Writers Institute. This concert is a co-production with WMHT Educational Telecommunications.

This is Albany Pro Musica’s 20th year hosting this beloved invitational festival of regional high school choirs. Guest composer and conductor Darrell Bryan, Adjunct Lecturer at Queen’s University and Artistic Director of the Kingston Chamber Choir will share the stage with Maestro Flores-Caraballo to conduct a festival chorus of more than 250 voices. The Philadelphia Orchestra with Albany Pro Musica
Mozart’s haunting Requiem came at the very end of his life: He died before he could finish it. A choral masterpiece featuring four renowned vocalists and the powerful forces of the Albany Pro Musica Concert Chorus, it is considered one of the greatest expressions of faith ever cast as a work of art. This is Albany Pro Musica’s 19th year of hosting this beloved invitational festival of regional high school choirs. Guest composer and conductor Brad Ellingboe, whose more than 150 published compositions and arrangements are favorites of choral ensembles across the world, will share the stage with Maestro Flores-Caraballo to conduct a festival chorus of more than 250 voices. Elingboe has received annual awards in composition from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) since 2000. For his work in making the music of Norway better known among English-speaking singers, Ellingboe was awarded Sankt Olavs Medaljen by His Majesty, King Harald of Norway, in 1994.

The Albany Pro Musica Masterworks Series presents Morten Lauridsen’s exquisite Lux Aeterna and Michael Haydn’s moving Requiem. Lauridsen was named “American Choral Master” by the National Endowment for the Arts and received the National Medal of Arts “for his composition of choral works combining musical beauty, power and spiritual depth that have thrilled audiences worldwide.” Under the shadow of his famous brother Joseph, Michael Haydn wrote some of the most beautiful music, of which his Requiem is his masterpiece. Two masterworks from two contrasting eras in one memorable performance with the Orchestra Pro Musica.

Robert Murray is a recent graduate of American Musical and Dramatic Academy New York and is thrilled to participate in Broadway Returns with Albany Pro Musica. Originally from Pittsburgh, Robert has had the opportunity to work professionally at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera and Pittsburgh Opera. He’s also appeared in Lindsay Mendez and Ryan Scott Oliver’s Actor Therapy in Concert at Feinstein’s 54 Below as well as Francesca Cappetta sings Dean Martin at Carnegie Hall.
Jamari Johnson Williams is a Gifford, FL born artist currently on tour with Motown the musical. He abandoned his professional football prospects and pursued his passion, attending the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Since graduating he has worked with many incredible artists and theatres including the 2015 national tour of Memphis, workshops and performing with Disney Cruise Line, South Pacific with VA Rep and Smokey Joes Cafe at the Palace Theatre. He thanks Jehovah and his family for his gifts and support, and hopes to inspire art and acceptance around the world.
Cassidy Layton is so excited to be in Albany performing alongside her musical mentor from so many years ago. Cassidy is a now an American Musical and Dramatic Academy graduate and actress singer and stand-up comedian in NYC. Favorite theater credits include La Maupin (Wild Project Theater), RansomWHERE (Bruno Walter Auditorium, Lincoln Center), and Bagels from Benny (92Y). Cassidy recently co-starred on an episode of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee (CBS) and appears regularly on Saturday Night Live (NBC). So much thanks and gratitude to mom, dad, José & Dharma, Albany Pro Musica and of course Jamari & Robert (for coming with her to perform at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall!).

Albany Pro Musica Artistic Director, Jose Daniel on the organ and his brother Marcos Daniel on the piano will amuse the audience with a celebration of the long-standing rivalry between instrument aficionados (and siblings) with an electrifying program filled with exciting repertoire that entertains and delights audiences as it keeps them on the edge of their seats. Proctors CEO Philip Morris will be a mediator in this duel with a humorous narration while the exquisite voices of Albany Pro Musica will add to the challenge accompanied and conducted by the contending brothers.

An homage to the rich cultural heritage of the Capital Region with The Musicians of Ma’alwyck, The Capital District Youth Chorale and Saratoga Springs Nacre Dance Company.
Our region’s rich history as a mosaic of cultures inspired this unique concert featuring music from many of the cultures which have influenced our region, including Dutch, German, English, Italian, Pole, African-American, Irish and Hispanic. The concert will include the world premiere of a work by Albany Pro Musica composer-in-residence Steve Murray, commissioned exclusively for this event. The concert will be preceded by a three week celebration throughout the Capital Region with art exhibitions, lectures and other events.

The Planets
APM Joined the Philadelphia Orchestra to perform Holst’s “The Planets”
Albany Pro Musica joined the Philadelphia Orchestra at Saratoga Performing Arts Center to perform Gustav Holst’s “The Planets”. Directed by Bramwell Tovey, the women of APM joined for the final movement entitled “Neptune”. This work was composed from 1914 to 1916. Each of the seven movements is named after a planet of the Solar System and has a distinctive musical character that relates to its corresponding astrological character, as defined by Holst.
