Beat! Beat! Drums!

Experience the beat-beat of drums, xylophones, gongs and other instruments during this rare evening of choral compositions punctuated by percussion. Contemporary poetry comes together with the illustrative harmonies of Robert Cohen’s “Of Eternity Considered as a Closed System,” and David Maslanka’s “Litany for Courage and the Seasons.” Sacred songs and even parts of a toe-tapping Caribbean mass make for a great variety of beat-filled music. With the Percussion Ensemble from The College of Saint Rose, Matt Dickson, Director.

Cathedral Collaboration III

Lauridsen: Lux Aeterna

Our third annual “Cathedral Collaboration” with The Cathedral of All Saints and the Choir of Men and Boys, and their director, Woodrow Bynum.

Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium” is one of the most loved works of choral music. Lux Aeterna, written for chorus and chamber orchestra, is one of the composer’s first large-scale work and includes the equally well-known “O Nata Lux.” The Cathedral Choir of Men & Boys will perform five works about light, including Eric Whitacre’s “Lux Aurumque,” Sowerby’s “Eternal Light” and Charles Wood’s “Hail, Gladdening Light”.

Texts from sacred Latin sources reference “light” and draw in the audience with shimmering, heartfelt harmonies. Brahms’ beloved “Geistliches Lied” and Latvian composer Peteris Vasks’ “Dona Nobis Pacem” completes the program in a setting perfectly suited to gorgeous sacred music.
